We spent the first couple days with Allen and his three oldest boys in Capitola hanging around the beach and Santa Cruz boardwalk where we spent the day on rides and eating corndogs.
It was so awesome observing them in their natural habitat. Plus the day was gorgeous.
Allen's wife, Natasha, met up with us at some point in San Fran to play at a playground. That's where we met their two youngest, Charleston and Harper.
Did all the touristy things around San Fran like Pier 39 and the barking seals. I could really watch all the seals all day long.
Clam chowder time! Sienna is in the middle of quoting the poster behind her: "Wham bam, thank you clam!"
We spent an afternoon at the aquarium. The jelly fish were mesmerizing.
One of the workers dissected a squid. So interesting.
A major highlight was touring Alcatraz. I had never been interested in it because it seemed like it'd be too touristy. But we all loved it. The ferry ride was lovely, the island has a lot of other buildings besides the prison that had their own stories, plus the whole history of the place was something I didn't know. The audio guide for the prison itself was spectacular. It featured voices from eight former inmates as well as several prison guards. Their experiences were fascinating.

The remains of a former home where prison guard families lived.
I can't remember if this is a school or some kind of meetingplace.

On one afternoon I made everyone trek to two architectural landmarks of the city, the Columbus Tower (green) and the Transamerica Pyramid.
They were mad about it but then we ended with ramen and we were all friends again. The final couple of days we spent near Sunnyvale hanging with Allen's whole family. We went to a train museum.
All the cousins together.
We hung out at their house for a bit while the kids terrorized each other in various ways.
I dubbed this Harper's Hideout, where she would often retreat to and giggle quietly from while her brothers roughhoused.
